1. "Safety Culture"

   Safety Culture is the way safety is perceived, valued and prioritized in an organisation. It reflects the real commitment to safety at all levels in the organisation. It has also been described as "how an organisation behaves when no one is watching".

   "Safety culture heavily is influenced by metrics. How safety is measured can fundamentally change how safety is managed, and how safety is managed is a primary contributor to an organization's safety culture. In companies with strong safety cultures, safety is embedded in daily management; it is part of the fabric of daily activity. It infuses every interaction, every decision and every behavior.

   Unfortunately, in many organizations, leaders only attend to safety during safety meetings, audits and re-actively, when there is an incident. The reason lies in metrics. Managers attend to what they are measured on because those measures are associated with consequences (positive and negative).

   So, one important foundational step to building an effective safety culture is to change the way safety is measured. While incident rate is a necessary metric, it should be one of several. The majority of measures should focus on proactive behaviors on the part of all employees – measures that track what people are doing to prevent accidents. When there are measures of what leaders do on a daily and weekly basis to prevent accidents, immediate and certain consequences can be engineered in to ensure those activities occur. This ensures that safety is attended to all the time, not just when there are incidents. Daily and weekly accountabilities will raise safety to an equal playing field with other business objectives and help infuse safety into all parts of work.

3. Ten things leaders should consider as they try to adapt and thrive through change.

   I took what many would consider a rare extended sabbatical to study the impact of change on all or most organizations, leaders, employees and potential customers. As one who has always challenged the status quo in HP, Agilent and elsewhere, while earning trust and outstanding ROI. I still challenge all my assumptions as I also encourage others to do as vital to staying ahead of conventional thinking. What I discovered evolved nicely from my body of work to now afford a better compass for leaders everywhere. I saw better paths for innovation, culture, trust, inclusion, agility, purpose and more. 5. Workplace Distractions That Affect Productivity

   You must have heard or perhaps even said on some days that "there are just not enough hours in a day to do all you wanted to get done”.

   In the next 3 minutes it will take you to read this article, chances are you'll probably check your phone, answer a text, switch to your laptop to read an email from your boss or glance at the Facebook or Twitter messages popping up in the corner of your screen. You may also hear some crosstalk about a colleague's weekend plans or a co-worker may stop by your desk for a quick question.

   For many of us, our most days are a fight between completing our to-do list and the distractions that take us away from achieving our goals. A growing body of scientific research is pointing to an "epidemic of overwhelm" -- a phrase coined by David Rock, author of a book and a Psychology Today blog entitled "your brain at work". Workplace distractions are common, but there are ways to handle them or avoid them altogether.

   Although various researches and surveys differ in the in the numerical importance but here are 10 common distractions worth pondering when you go to work tomorrow!

   1. Have a Plan – Prioritize – Post Deadlines

   If you react to whatever comes across your desk in spontaneous fashion, rather than developing a plan and to-do list, you’ll be constantly distracted and feel that you are not accomplishing anything. Some tasks will take as long as you give them. So put a deadline on each task – not only when it will be finished, but also how much time you will allocate.

   1. Block Time Slots

   If there’s project to be done, it’s essential to put aside a block of time on your calendar to handle it. After all, if you don’t schedule your own time, someone else will. But if you schedule time, you can now say you’re busy when asked.

   1. Doing it All Yourself

   Just because you are a leader doesn’t mean you are the right person to do everything. Take another look at your to-do list. Are there items on the list you can hand off to someone else? What are the items that maybe shared with others.

   1. Perfectionism

   We all want to do a perfect job – feeling productive – but because of one small detail that doesn’t feel quite right - you may have succumbed to the law of diminishing returns. Perfection is an elusive goal, David Rock says; focus on excellence, which is achievable – and move on.

   1. Sense of Urgency

   You feel compelled to answer every e-mail, text message, tweet, or status update immediately on your many electronic outposts. Or you keep checking to see if someone has responded to your latest e-mail, text message, tweet, or status update. Meanwhile, you may not be getting much work done. Urgent matters grab your attention, and you flip from one to the other, with each new e-mail or phone call, like a ricocheting pinball. Schedule times to check your emails during the day or use your breaks.

   1. Open-door Policy

   You are focused, in the groove, when somebody drops by to chat but availability doesn’t always mean accessibility. To get a handle on this distraction, be cordial and say that you are busy and will be able to talk later – be specific on time though. Harvey Shachter (Globe & Mail Article) states; “to get a handle on this distraction, I have one rule I share with those around me: My door is always open … unless it’s closed.”

   1. Technology & Social Media

   This echoes the previous distraction, because technology diverts you from actual work, such as when you surf the Web, endlessly seeking information. Between the Internet, cellphones, facebook, instant chats - there are so many stimulants in today's workplace; it's easy to see how one can get side-tracked. Schedule a break to look at any non-work related tasks so your work productivity is not affected.

   1. Too Many Meetings/ Conference Calls

   Not all meetings are necessary, or require your presence. “If you can find a way to avoid the unnecessary meetings, you’ll have more time to do the necessary work.

   1. Multi-Tasking

   Multi-tasking is something that is often touted as the key to success. However, there is a lot of research out there that points to the idea that multi-tasking may actually worsens the quality of work that we accomplish. It can also very easily take us off course. It’s important to multi-task sparingly. Your work will most likely improve the more that you focus/ the less that you multi-task.

   Workstation /Workspace

   Is your workspace designed for health and comfort? Steelcase (Office Furniture Manufacturer) found that individuals who received ergonomics training and used adjustable chairs had an average increase in productivity of 17.8 percent! If possible, invest in a chair that can adjust to your body, or use cushioning to find that perfect fit. Raise or lower your computer monitor. If you feel stifled in your current work environment, try using a conference room or temporary office space or work remotely to get your creative juices flowing. Make small changes to increase your comfort and productivity.

   These distractions that affect everyone, but by following some of these tips, you may just see a decline in the distractions and improvement in your productivity.

6. Innovation and Creativity in your Organization

   Many organizations or production companies want to be innovative and their R&D to be more productive. There is also an irony that some R&D are created for Tax saving purpose. If the latter is the case, there is noway the innovation will flow in.

   If the boss wants his team to be innovative, he or she should be innovative in the first place. There is a need to be up to date on the business around the globe and not just in their local area. Globalization is the order of the day.

   The boss could identify an Innovation Leader to lead their R&D team.
   Usually the Research ideas are great to start with in any companies but when it comes to the development, it is sluggish.

   If you do not know which type of vessel you are making, there is noway your clay is going to take some good shape. Probably name your child before it is born, that is the essence of innovation.

   What are the things carried out by other R&D units of the competitors or what possibly they might be doing right now needs to be imagined if not spied into by the company first. Maybe your competing work might fail in most possibility unless you have a business edge or money and Research team power. Otherwise, the game is to think of something which others won't even be trying.

   Include in your team not just some subject experts but experts from other fields which you may not think as appropriate. If pharmaceutical product is what you require, organic chemists, chemical engineers or biologists and biotechnologists could be the obvious choices but can you include some of your marketing staff into the brainstorm or even your family members! None ask a patient what they want but if you do, you might strike something new.

   Please see to that there is "Brainstorming Sessions" with the help of experienced Facilitators, periodic technology up gradation workshops, idea marathons, best ideas award for the R&D staff, training in Innovation methodologies such as TRIZ,teoriya resheniya izobretatelskikh zadach in Russian or "the theory of inventive problem solving" a Russian Methodology developed by Genrich Altshuller (1926-1998).

   Though the author worked in leading R&D institutions, there was never a program to address the innovation need or Innovation Training. Even at the University Research the teachers tend to say "Think out of the box", while not even explaining what the box is.

   The box remains as a mysterious black box for the students. Sitting in your cabin, a box, you cannot discover the world. Mind boggling environment needs to be created in your company. Think of some "Innovation Chamber", but not to become a box again.

12. Cyclical Business Process Management vs. Linear Project Management

    When introducing new users to BPM as a methodology and BPMS as a technology, I find myself often stressing the importance to differentiate between project management and business process management in order to achieve successful process implementations.

    There certainly seems to be a strong and positive correlation of having concluded a successful sales cycle, customer on-boarding and the resulting user optimism – reaching euphoric levels at times – of what that newly acquired “BPM Tool” is supposed to achieve. Both, a certain commercial hype and the users’ willingness to conquer the world, are necessary and welcomed, providing the required positive energy for the challenges ahead.

    In my experience however, I observed that this energy, if not channeled adequately, can have disastrous effects.
    Here is the challenge: Despite the fact that a BPM platform, the applied methodology, measuring and improving continuously the process – all point to an integral mid-to-long-term strategy a company will have to engage in, the user (especially – but not limited to – “first timers”) almost always and instinctively will try to squeeze a long wish list of solutions to current problems and desired goals into a BPM implementation project, which always will be linear and comparatively short lived.
    A thing to keep in mind – for each project, also in the case of BPM implementations, the triple restriction applies: scope, time and resources within a rigid framework of desired quality.

    For a continued BPM success, successful BPM projects have to be achieved continuously.

    Each of these projects has a limited budget and time frame (remember that even a time and material based budget has an upper limit and becomes fixed in the long run). So, “priorizations” of scopes and goals are absolutely crucial (and there are many methods of doing that), making sure that everybody involved understands that a current exclusion of a requirement doesn’t mean that it will be perpetually ignored – it just maybe a goal for one of the next BPM implementation projects. In fact, managing an accumulative inventory (through process knowledge workers) of implemented and still pending business process requirements is a very effective way to promote end-user driven process innovations. At the same time it helps to keep the implementation project in balance.

    Low cost Yellow Sticky Traps to control whitefly

    Whitefly again taking its toll on cotton crop in Punjab. Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana advised farmers to use Yellow Sticky Traps for farmers to control whitefly population in the cotton crop. Innovation Cell of ICAR-Central Potato Research Station, Jalandhar (Regional Station of ICAR-CPRI, Shimla) had innovated low cost Yellow Sticky Traps from locally available materials. Fifty traps of 60 cm X 40 cm per hectare are purposeful to control the whitefly menace. Traps available in market cost Rs 50/- to Rs 60/- per piece, but the Yellow Sticky Traps developed by Innovation Cell of ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar cost only Rs 10/- to Rs 15/- per trap. Farmers can make these traps from white fibre sheet, painted with golden yellow colour. These sheets are cut into pieces of size 60 cm X 40 cm. These traps are to be coated with thin layer of grease or castor oil. Tiethese traps on wooden sticks in such a way, so that they remain just above the canopy of the plant. Dr JS Minhas, Head, ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar told that these traps are equally effective to those commercially available in the market and these are very cheap and reusable. So farmers can save money and control white fly. ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar decided to come forward to help the farmers infighting the whitefly menace on cotton crop by helping farmers to make their own Yellow Sticky Traps. 14. Why is mentoring needed and where to find them?

    Mentorship is important right from starting your career to achieving all your career goals. It increases one’s productivity and efficiency. Online mentorship is as effective as offline if not better. Online mentoring is especially helpful for those who have constraints of time.

    Technically speaking, mentoring is a relationship where one person impacts his knowledge and experiences to another person. The one on the receiving side is called the mentee and the one imparting the knowledge is called the mentor. A mentorship almost always bridges the skill gap in people. What is otherwise learnt with a lot of effort and time could easily be taught by a mentor. Mentoring has a broad span. It can range from teaching a child about a drawing and life to the now redefined concept in which mentoring is considered to be a career development strategy. It is an exchange of experiences and perspective from one person to another. Both the mentor and the mentee are benefitted by this.

    How mentoring helps jobseekers?

    For jobseekers, mentoring can make a lot of differences. Soft skills, which are basically interpersonal and communication skills, are as important these days as hard or technical skills. In developing soft skills, a mentorship programme is found to be the best solution. A mentee can learn the various nuances of soft skills from his/her interaction with the mentor. In fact the relationship between the mentor and the mentee is a symbiotic one where both are benefitted.
