Low cost Yellow Sticky Traps to control whitefly
Whitefly again taking its toll on cotton crop in Punjab. Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana advised farmers to use Yellow Sticky Traps for farmers to control whitefly population in the cotton crop. Innovation Cell of ICAR-Central Potato Research Station, Jalandhar (Regional Station of ICAR-CPRI, Shimla) had innovated low cost Yellow Sticky Traps from locally available materials. Fifty traps of 60 cm X 40 cm per hectare are purposeful to control the whitefly menace. Traps available in market cost Rs 50/- to Rs 60/- per piece, but the Yellow Sticky Traps developed by Innovation Cell of ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar cost only Rs 10/- to Rs 15/- per trap. Farmers can make these traps from white fibre sheet, painted with golden yellow colour. These sheets are cut into pieces of size 60 cm X 40 cm. These traps are to be coated with thin layer of grease or castor oil. Tiethese traps on wooden sticks in such a way, so that they remain just above the canopy of the plant. Dr JS Minhas, Head, ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar told that these traps are equally effective to those commercially available in the market and these are very cheap and reusable. So farmers can save money and control white fly. ICAR-CPRS, Jalandhar decided to come forward to help the farmers infighting the whitefly menace on cotton crop by helping farmers to make their own Yellow Sticky Traps.
