I arrived in Cayeli / Rize, Turkey in late April. I spent six days working with an underground copper mine for the purpose of evaluating their current tire program. The visit included:

* Analysis of the existing contract with the tire service provider

* Analysis of tire performance records for the year 2013 and the first quarter of 2014. A report of pertinent findings was generated.

* A tour of the underground operations to inspect tires in service as well as operating conditions within the mine.

* A visit to the tire service providers operations to inspect tire repair practices and products available. Some helpful suggestions were offered.

* At the end of the visit, a PowerPoint presentation of all of my findings, along with suggestions for improvement, was presented to a group of key mine site supervisors.

I believe the visit was a great success. The management team complemented me on the presentation. Also, in following up on the suggestions offered, I was told that they are already implementing some of my suggestions.

Charles Ivie is a retired NASA research scientist, astronomer, and space craft systems designer. He has worked in the aerospace and science arena for over 40 years. Most of that time was spent at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, but his work job also took him to other NASA centers including the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Cape Canaveral in Florida, and NASA headquarters in Washington DC.

With specialties in optical and radio astronomy, spacecraft science systems design, and relativistic physics and quantum mechanics, Ivie was able to help a client he connected with on Zintro. This client was preparing a paper on black hole physics and quasars. The researcher did not have a strong background in this area and was looking for someone with a background in astrophysics.

I responded to an inquiry in which the critical problem was a server that was infiltrated by spammers. The initial phone consultation enabled us to define the terms of a consulting engagement.

The client was actually another consultant, looking for additional technical firepower to address the issue of spammer hijacking. The situation was such that the consultant's customer was about to have their server disconnected by their ISP because of the spam flowing through it.

I worked with my client (the consultant), and together we traced the problem to its source. I drafted an 18-page report of findings, describing all of the vulnerabilities I discovered in the process of investigating the spam attack. Log file analysis revealed the attacker's IP address and infected files, some of which were used to create other infected files. Some people get stressed out by the tedious process of digging for clues, but this is the type of firefight I really enjoy.

Not only did the initial consultation lead to the creation of a project, it led to a follow-up project to ensure that the original problem was truly solved. Beyond that, it led to an ongoing, monthly schedule to revisit the server and respond vigorously to any security anomalies that crop up. In this situation, my job is to enable another consultant to offer broader services to his clients than he could provide on his own.

The next challenge is to figure out how to make Zintro a larger part of my consulting practice. It is certainly a great source of high-quality contacts.
