5. Is your fashion brand considering new markets? stephen-laundy

   I have worked in fashion for over 40 years and am now 52. Through FashionCompass.co.uk I have been introducing fashion brands and retailers to new markets as well as helping them develop their own for 9 years. I have worked with Australian brands and signed them an agent in New Zealand, an Israeli brand to sign an agent in Israel (so the designer can focus on strengths), Brands to ecomm in India, a Canadian brand to sign distributors in Scandinavia, China retail brands to find a retail partners in Middle East, U.S. brands entering a number of European territories, Asian and of course UK wholesale and retail brands to both grow at home as well as partners overseas. There are many other examples but I hope you can see my service is global and local.

   FashionCompass.co.uk has had varied clients that include: household names to start-ups, Wholesale only brands, large retail brands as well as multi channel and all aspects: Commercial, Premium, Luxury; Collections, Accessories, Footwear, mens and womens etc. I also work with partners for licensing occasionally.

   Is your Brand looking for Agents, Distributors or Retail partners in New Markets? Or perhaps even in your domestic market, are you looking to develop sales through Agents and Distributors? If yes, these are common things that come up in my initial discussions with brands and retailers. I hope they are of use.

   Is your brand ready to go overseas? I find today there is so much talk from governments and non profit organisations: “Do business overseas!”, and many of the brands I see are really not ready and could do with increasing their domestic market. If a brand is not strong at home, most will not be overseas. Even if they are ready, many brands are not aware enough of the many options they have. We have all been to exhibitions and seen the empty stands of brands that have spent $1000's in hope of customers, and then they are told, “you need to do it a few times”. I would almost never advise a brand to do an exhibition as first step to enter new markets.

   How should I make first contact to introduce my brand to overseas companies? This is key and something I work on brands with extensively before I begin searching partners, agents and distributors. So many brands send, lookbooks, price lists, links to website and social media, press releases etc. I tell brands, “you are giving these people a half hour job just to look at your brand”. A lot can happen in half an hour. I work on a successful formula to introduce the brand where the recipient can know in 30 seconds if they are interested and react. This counts for all, large household name and retail brands too.

   Are you a pure retailer who wants to start some wholesale as a way to enter new markets or even grow at home? Supplying wholesale collections during peak selling times is normally a stumbling block as well as small initial orders. There are solutions, sometimes using a wholesale sales agency or distributor as well as a carefully selected wholesale collection. Equally you may be a wholesale only model with an idea to retail/ concessions/ shop-in-shop.

   Why enter new markets? For some clients they may have strong ecommerce sales in e.g. Germany and want brick and mortar presence, equally they may have no ecommerce and a wholesale/ retail entry can help drive business online? There are many reasons other than simply to grow or brand equity.

   Which markets should you be looking at? This can depend on product categories, price levels and other factors. I have several brands a week contacting me from all over the globe who see other countries economies doing well e.g. to enter the U.K., as over the last few years the economy has been strongish here. The UK may have been buoyant compared to others, but from a fashion perspective it feels to me like every brand under the sun is trying to get into the UK, not to mention high rents (that includes the agents, not just retail). Sometimes it may be better to look at others such as recovering economies, e.g. Spain was on its knees not long ago. My train of thought is: it can only get better and the brands that were there going into the downturn suffered which can open doors for new brands.

   Are your margins suitable? If you are selling online, your RRP is visible to the world, can it accommodate wholesale or retail margins with a partner/ agent/ distributor in the middle? I am regularly working with brands to enter countries with high import duties too. It is important to choose several markets when I work with a client, but I also keep an open mind on other markets. As I am constantly contacting agents and distributors with new brands I come across opportunities that my clients may not have considered.

   Which business model is best for my brand? That can depend on the actual market. With China entry for example, the license/ distribution JV model is proving ever popular, whereas with Europe traditional agencies can still be the solution. For some brands I have worked on a pure ecommerce entry model and others pop up stores for a period. There are many business models and some brands I find are very stuck with e.g. “what works at home” or watching other brands mode. I often show alternatives. Recently I have put two brands together, different product categories but both share the same target consumer, both want to enter the others market.

   What other costs should I consider? Again every brand is unique. For designer collections supplying agents extra collections can be a huge cost, so it maybe better to look at Pan European or even Pan Global agencies. A recent designer client actually manufactured their own too, so extra collections was easy. Other costs can be PR/ Social Media (which in themselves can be a total entry solution). Many agents and distributors are now looking to levy Showroom Fees. I have seen more and more of these. Most of these are warranted, quite a few I have come across are essentially just looking to rent their showroom.

   Do I need to meet the distributor/ agent? There are many occasions where I have teamed agents and distributors, separated by 1000's of miles purely through Skype meetings. Generally though if travel is necessary I would always make sure there is sufficient interest, and as many options as possible.

Prior to the call I study your brand for at least half an hour, the call usually on Skype normally takes in excess of an hour and a follow up email another half an hour, not exactly, nor intended to profit from.

7. Dryer Installation

   Did you purchase a brand new dryer? Do not call anyone just yet. You got this! We are here to guide you through dryer installation.

   Here is the list of items you will most probably find in the box

   Water drain hose
   Filter drawer spare sponge
   User Manual
   Drying basket
   Drying basket user manual
   Note, however, that these will be in the package depending on the model. Fingers crossed, you have all of these components before you start you dryer installation.

   Next, you are about to start you dryer installation; Prepare the following tools and extra components you will need to get this over with once and for all.

   Let’s get started!

   Turn off the power to the dryer installation area at the breaker box.
   Turn off the gas at the shut-off valve.
   Connect the gas line.
   Test the gas connection.
   Install your dryer exhaust tube.
   Plug in the dryer and push it into final position.
   Level the dryer.
   Test the dryer after the dryer installation is complete.
   Too complicated? Let’s start over. This is simply a dryer installation, not a rocket science.

   If you have a dryer you most certainly you have the space. Space is crucial if you want you dryer to serve a lifetime. Make sure to place it in an open area that’s being well ventilated.
   Place the dryer 10-15 inches away from the wall to make sure the air flow in and out through the vents is not hindered. Additional spacing for installation won’t hurt either.
   The floor has to be reliable enough to support the dryer weight which is 200 lbs in average. Have stable grounds!
   You will get an instructions notebook for your model as well. Look through the electrical requirements and note what kind of electrical connections you will be using to get you dryer running.
   Note: Avoid using an extension cord not to bump with power issues.

   Prepare dryer for leveling the legs. Screw in the leveling legs. If the dyer is not standing on one level use a wood block or something more convenient to adjust it.
   Now that you checked the gas connection and plugged in the dryer KEEP IN MIND!

   Never forget to constantly clean the lint tramp
   Keep checking the venting tube
   Make sure your appliance is standing on even ground
   After using the dryer sheets considerable number of times clean up the residue it left inside.

   Do not squeeze your washer into a tiny laundry room
   Put a screen over the vent open to the outside
   Do not squeeze in as much as you possibly can, the belt around the drum will break not supporting the weight. Your Clothes, on the other hand, will take ages to dry.
   Avoid putting all the wrong things in starting with very delicate materials finishing with coins from your pockets. Wigs, toys and purses are to be excluded as well.

8. 6 Mistakes Sales Reps Tend to Make

   Did you or someone you know just start their first sales job? If so, you might want to check out the following list. Below are six things first-year sales reps often get wrong.
   1) They rely on cold, high-volume outreach.

   Using cold, high-volume outreach can set a rookie sales rep back because it doesn’t allow them the opportunity to build rapport with buyers before connecting with them. When a rookie rep reaches out to hundreds of prospects, they run the risk of turning the majority off because buyers aren’t familiar with their name and haven’t demonstrated any interest in what they’re selling.

   Instead, rookies should dedicate themselves to building a bond with potential prospects prior to reaching out. The first step can be engaging with prospects on social media or commenting on a blog post a buyer has written. That way, the rep can become familiar to the prospect before the first email.
   2) They let quality prospects fall through the cracks.

   Losing track of quality prospects is a trap rookie reps are susceptible to because they might not be accustomed to using a complex CRM or another lead tracking system. New reps often forget to input data, resulting in lost prospects and opportunities.

   In this situation, the right CRM is essential. Reps who don’t have to worry about inputting lead data and who automatically receive reminders about when to follow up with prospects are in a position to be successful -- look for a CRM that offers these features.

   3) They use the same pitch for everyone.

   It's easy for a newbie to use a sales script as a crutch. But trotting out the same tired pitch regardless of the circumstance can turn buyers away because each prospect has a unique pain point that requires a unique solution. By keeping the pitch the same, reps are unable to showcase the specific benefits the product presents to a prospect.

   Rookie reps should instead devote time to researching each prospect, engaging with them online, learning about their business, and putting together a tailored message based on the information they’ve learned. Following these steps allows the rookie to present the product to the prospect in the best possible light.
   4) They qualify prospects too quickly.

   Reps who breeze through qualification don’t provide themselves enough time to dive deep into a prospect’s situation and determine whether or not they are the right fit. New reps often make this mistake in an effort to fill their pipelines in a flash.

   Reps should instead commit to discovering as much as they can about a prospect prior to qualifying them, and asking them careful questions on the discovery call. By executing thorough research, reps avoid churn down the road.
   5) They use high-pressure tactics.

   Relying on high-pressure tactics can lead to trouble for rookies because every buyer moves at their own pace. Sometimes new reps' enthusiasm for their new role translates into pushing prospects to close ASAP.

   But practicing high-pressure tactics often scares buyers away. Rookie reps should learn to educate and guide each buyer instead of trying to persuade them to buy now. When a rep is there to educate instead of force, they can build trust and credibility with the prospect, which results in a better relationship.
   6) They abandon the prospect once they’re a customer.

   You’ve spent so much time developing a relationship with the prospect before they buy. Why would you throw that away once they become a customer?

   Forgetting about the buyer once they’re a customer is a pitfall reps should be wary of because they might lose the relationship they’ve developed with that customer. And this can lead to a lack of valuable referrals and renewals. New reps who are eager to get their first deals under their belt are particularly susceptible to this mistake.

   According to Dale Carnegie, 90% of customers are comfortable giving referrals. The first step to earning a referral, however, is to maintain a great relationship with the customer. Forging a lasting relationship starts with following up regularly and soliciting feedback.

   Rookie reps can get caught up trying to do too much and fall prey to dangerous mistakes -- even though they have the best of intentions. First-year reps are eager and willing to learn, but it’s critical to recognize the difference between effective and ineffective tactics.

    How to get about realising the best procurement practices for your company !

    Procurement is quite a relevant term for everyone in business, either trading or manufacturing. However, only those who have been through the procurement process know its importance, complexity and the criticality of getting it right the first time. For an industry, the varying categories of requirement create challenges often with limited specialisation in only a few of them. Errors in the process mean huge costs in terms of maintenance, shutdowns, loss of precious time, etc. The challenges during procurement are not about finding the right product or authorised vendor for a particular category, but much more than that like basis of negotiating for the best prices, getting in time delivery, optimising freight costs, obtaining credit, maintaining cordial relations to ensure priority over other customers, and eventually be in a win – win situation for both the parties. Procurements can be simplified using few basic rules.
    Planning your procurement gives you an edge in terms of lead time for delivery. Timely dealing with requirement gives you enough time to call on multiple quotes and negotiate with them in detail. Planning will also help budgets and release of vendor payments appropriately, so that vendors take more interest. Once vendors start taking interest in supplying, you can immediately try to redeem your buying power and start negotiating terms with the vendor. Planning is also interlinked with savings in terms of optimising freight costs, minimising vendors, reducing ordering costs, tax calculations, etc.
    Standardise your requirement – Standardisation has an advantage of getting better discounts for same brand. Today, almost all major brands cater to complete range of requirements and choosing one brand for a category, will help you minimise maintenance issues too since only one is to be involved for it.
    Minimise vendors and develop reliable vendors – This has its own advantages since you reduce your ordering costs, follow up costs, documentation costs, and develop reliable vendor base by giving good business to a vendor. Maintenance of category wise vendors creates better awareness among those involved and helps timely resolution of those issues. Vendor also knows your requirements and their usage pattern, which helps him, maintain the required inventory. Working with good people has its own advantages, when we need their help in times of distress. Maintaining vendor base has its own challenges when we try to get quotations from multiple vendors and release purchase orders for only a few of them based on L1 (lowest cost) parameter everytime, obviously after making an apple to apple comparison.
    Prefer high quality products; consider procurement as an asset building exercise. High quality products have their own value and prove useful, prevent frequent shutdowns and thus lower maintenance costs. Quality also ensures high value for end products.
    Optimise logistics by defining minimum order value every time you place an order. No one gains the freight costs, neither buyer nor supplier. Always look for better options considering the urgency associated with requirements. While a flight courier may take around Rs.200 a kg, a road transport agency will take between Rs.3-Rs.10 per kg as freight charges. Appropriate planning helps optimise logistics in a much efficient manner.
    
    Tax calculations too play an important role while deciding on vendors. Tax structure varies across different businesses and across different geographies. As an example, while the standard norms are for 2% CST against ‘C’ form, for some vendors from eastern states the CST applicable is only 1%. Also, if you have a unit in Uttar Pradesh, ordering from outside the district, even within the same state, attracts 1% entry tax in addition to all the other taxes. The entry tax cannot be claimed for refund under any procedures too. Such complex tax structure may not be easy to deal but quite important even if your requirements are small or if you are running a comparably smaller unit. As you grow bigger in size, even though the taxes are of not much value and you may not evade them intentionally, adherence to rules is crucial because the goodwill takes a harsh beating in case of a tax raid by relevant authorities. And in this tech-savvy world, no one will spare us right from family members to all types of media. This may be unintentional, but no one considers ignorance as an excuse once you are caught.
    Keep up with latest technological advances since we are always in competition. Using outdated technology for long will result in higher costs and eventually non competitive products / services.
    Finally, again, better vendor payments will always get you that extra bit of advantage from vendors’ confidence and market reputation. Goodwill has its own value and this value will help you enhance your buying power.
    Each aspect on smarter procurement is related to the other and therefore interlinked to deliver combined results. Planning goes hand in hand with optimising overheads, similarly developing reliable vendor base shall help use the tax benefits at different locations. So implementing one idea also helps implement the other one and so be smarter in all aspects at once.
    Eventually, on analysis, a rupee saved through procurement results in repetitive savings, considering finance costs, processing costs, taxes, working capital limitations, credits, insurances and other overheads. Try calculating it once and you will understand its importance over a period of time as to what values have you eventually realized through efficient procurement processes.
    For someone who says marketing is difficult, request them for handling procurement once and they shall never complain about their jobs. No one asks for reason when you sell your products and achieve targets, but everyone would and even you will ask yourself as to why should you be buying from a particular vendor instead of others for a particular product. Then you also have to satisfy your audit teams and bosses for same to maintain your prestige and dignity at workplace. It is very easy for everyone to come up and say “what is your commission in this purchase order?” and go unconvinced at an answer that commission is not your style of working. The only way to convince is to challenge them better your prices. No wonder you will start being appreciated soon!

    Yet the myth prevails: “if you build it [and invest hundreds or thousands monthly in SEO], they will come.” You may eventually get traffic. Of course, even with good content-based SEO, that takes time. So then, where is the formula for converting any new visitor traffic you may receive, regardless of its source?

    Here, Brand message serves its purpose. This core foundation mainly shows (+ briefly tells) targets what you offer that other businesses cannot.

    When new visitors are given no reason to stick and stay, they are lost forever. Bounce new visitors, and sacrifice their entire potential spend: revenue and profit for the complete lifetime of the customer.

    Huge risk. Enormous loss.

    Attention spans are short. People have no interest in wading through paragraphs and pages of text to find a solution for their problem once they want to buy. They must instantly see and realize why they should do business with you…instead of the competition.

    A visitor arriving on a website with an explicit need, ready to make a purchase, needs to recognize the rationale: why should they choose YOUR solution? What’s your value proposition? If not evident - amidst a text laden or disorganized format, focused on features rather than benefits - that visitor will be instantly headed to the next site.

    Implementation of an effective, enticing Brand Identity prior to launch enables a business to capitalize on every visitor interaction. Grab attention and engage interest. Develop interest and increase traction.

    Reinforce traction by converting the visitor into a customer. Then, provide each with an incentive to tell their friends about the business too: securing quick-converting referrals.

    Brand Identity development requires thinking strategically about how you want the business to be seen, experienced, and remembered. After all, emotion drives purchasing motivation. What will ignite interest, triggering immediate action?

    What speaks to the target’s needs? What value and benefit will resonate in your offering? What do you want them to instantly associate with, and understand from, your message when they see your logo…land on your site?

    In the same way that we select a specific suit, phone, computer, briefcase, haircut, set of mannerisms, and posture to convey our personal image…this is the way we must consider expressing our venture’s best assets: through a cogent Brand Identity. Eventually, this establishes and reinforces Brand Recognition as well for further traction. A name, logo, domain, image series, and combination of talking points that requires decoding and lengthy explanations is not going to serve this crucial, longstanding purpose.

    Be clear.

    After all, Nike, Google, Apple, Adidas, Amazon and the other big brands have spent billions in outbound marketing campaigns over decades of time to become etched in the public's memory and psyche. Unless you have the budget for that (even if you did, you still want to address your targets’ explicit needs with memorable clarity), craft a Brand ID that shows, rather than having to tell.

    Another way to think of this is spotlighting the experience of your company and its products/services. With luxury cars as your product, you may be inclined to discuss horsepower, maneuverability, performance, and other features of the vehicle. Yet, what makes an impression – and sells cars – is a driver behind the wheel who can feel the difference: experience the benefits.

    Brand Identity is far more than a logo, slogan, and color scheme. Companies that recognize this fact, and its importance, are those gaining effective traction. They endure.

    They find connection: success, market share, and revenues at every stage of growth. After all, they planned for it…they designed it that way.

16. Schooling for households on less than $2 per day by John Northrop

    There is a type of schooling in sub-Saharan Africa and other areas of the developing world, which is starting to gain considerable notice. The topic is low-cost private education.

    The idea is that students whose household income is at or below $2 per day can still go to school and receive an education, which ensures they are learning in a viable environment with teachers who are able to manage the size of the class.

    The cost is still heavy as a proportion of household income but “parents choose to spend it, with the hope — and the belief — that education is the path out of poverty.” It costs around $6 – $10 per month for education and another $6 per month for food and uniforms.

    Scalability is the key to being able to provide low cost schooling. Central administration with networked tools allows for low admin and support costs with teachers and the curriculum being the focal point. Different approaches are taken by different schools with scripted curricula in some and more flexible curricula in others.

    Public (and often free) schooling is available in many sub-Saharan school systems. However, with an increase of population in sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that the number of children under 14 is expected to increase by 112m between 2010 and 2025. This is an additional 7.5 million children, on average, per year. This is in addition to the 30 million children who do not already receive education. Whipping out the calculator, at least $11 billion is required in addition to current education spending in sub-Saharan Africa alone. $11 billion is less than 1% of global defense spending for those who struggle with zero’s.

    It has been proven that education empowers. In one study, access to education reduced infant mortality 16 years later due to the knowledge gained in school of the new mothers. Imagine the impact if, when the population growth reaches tipping point, more people than not have an education.

    Low-fee private schools in sub-Saharan Africa make up a virtually untapped $14.5bn market, according to Bridge co-founder Shannon May, an estimate based on what poor parents are already paying for nursery or primary education without branded providers.
